OpenBox is simple and lightweight Window Manager, providing a graphical desktop environment in an interactive session on Viper.

  1. Select Viper OpenBox Desktop
  2. Select the number of hours you want your session to run for
  3. Click Launch
  4. The session will initially be queued, but if resource is available will shortly be marked as running. Depending on your connection, choose an appropriate Compression (lower the better) and Image Quality (higher the better)
  5. Click Launch Viper OpenBox Desktop

Initially you will see a blank grey screen, however if you right click a menu will appear:

  • Viper Interactive - This will provide a standard terminal on the compute node running your desktop interactive session. From here you can launch graphical tools that will open up in the desktop environment (e.g. Matlab)
  • Firefox - Opens the Firefox web browser
  • Reconfigure - Resets the menu (currently doesn't do anything)
  • Exit - Terminates your desktop interactive session (requires confirmation)

You can get a list of open windows with a middle click (mousewheel click) on the desktop. The mousewheel will also let you cycle through the available virtual desktops
