* You will be prompted to enter your University credentials. Only save your password if you are the only person who has access to your device

* Select 'Logon' to start your connection

* Once the connection has been established, the 'BIG-IP Edge Client' will be minimised to the system tray (bottom right of screen, next to the clock).

* You will need to map your network drives, such as G:, T:, X: or Z: using the instructions found in the knowledge items:

* For Mac OS X, see knowledge item KI 000240

* To disconnect your session, click the 'F5' icon in your system tray, and select 'Disconnect'

You will notice that there are two options for connecting:

Auto-Connect: This will start a VPN session automatically whenever you are connected to a non-University network. This can be useful if your device should always be able to access University network resources (ie. A University owned device used entirely for work purposes).

Connect: This starts a VPN connection on-demand. This can be useful if the device is also used for personal use, and a connection to the University network is not permanently required.

If you find that you can connect, but cannot access resources, despite following instructions to get configured, please do the following:

* Load Control Panel

* Go to Network and Internet

* Go to Network and Sharing Center

* Go to Change Adapter Settings

* Right click your network adapter and choose Properties

* Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP)

* Ensure that "obtain DNS server addresses automatically" are set in General

* Click OK

* Click Close

* Restart your PC and try connecting, with the VPN client, again.

* If you still can't connect:

* Click Start and type  services.msc

* Look for the DNS service and see if it's set to start

Introduction

To work on Viper remotely off campus, you will need to setup a VPN connection.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a method of extending a private network (such as the University) over a public network (such as the Internet). It enables you to send and receive data across a public network as though you were directly connected to the private network in a secure way.

The University VPN service operates using a 'split-tunnel' policy. This means:

  • Network traffic to/from Unviersity-hosted resources will be handled by the VPN connection.
  • Connectivity to your local network and the Internet will continue as normal.
  • Geo-located services will not be affected. E.g. the Google Australia page will appear if you connect from Australia.
  • The University does not track or log your activity outside of its jurisdiction.

For security and compliance reasons, not all on-campus services are available via a VPN connection. If you cannot access a service while using the VPN; please contact the Support portal.

Windows

To connect to services that are normally only available whilst on the campus network, such as our network drives and Corporate Systems suite, you will need to set up a VPN connection using GlobalProtect. More information on VPNs can be found in the Knowledge Item KI 000846.

Instructions for setting up VPN on a University managed device To install GlobalProtect on your University device, from the Start Menu, search for and open Software Center. From the Software Center, find ‘GlobalProtect’”. Click the ‘Install’ button and follow the onscreen instructions. You will be required to restart your laptop so please ensure you save your work.

Please note: this package can only be installed when you are on campus and your device is connected to the University network via eduroam or a network cable. If you attempt to install the package and you have not connected your device via eduroam or a network cable on campus, you will receive a notification asking you to connect to the University network and to run the package again.
